I buy a lot of True Crime books. It's my passion. I buy books and Encyclopedia about Murder cases, Serial Killers, Criminology, Organized Crime, Law Enforcement, Criminals...To me there's nothing more enjoyable than to discover new cases and to learn more about cases from the late 1800's and early 1900's. So last month I was looking at my collection and said to myself "Wait; I still don't have a book about the Ripper case." Which is kind of weird since in the last few months I bought books about very obscure cases ( for example a book about the murder of Betsy Aardsma in 1969 ). I knew it wasn't right, so I did a quick search here on Amazon and decided to buy this book, THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF JACK THE RIPPER, based on the many great reviews I've read on this site. And I'm really glad I bought this book, this is now one of my favorites.I agree with what most reviewers said about this book: This book is a wonderful introduction to the legendary Jack The Ripper case and a very solid overview of all the facts and theories about this case. This book is all about the facts, and this is, in my opinion, what makes this book so great. I'm not a "Ripperologist" and I admit that I didn't knew every details about the case before I bought this book. However one thing I knew is that there's a lot of myths about this case and very little facts. I knew that there's a lot of wild and crazy theories and not a lot of realistic suspects. I knew there's a lot of unreliable books written about the case and only an handful of reliable book available. This book, wonderfully edited by Maxim Jakubowski and Nathan Braund, is a great way to learn all the facts about this case and to finally know the truth about this legendary and fascinating case.So in this book you'll find all the details about the known Ripper murders; Complete chronology, Autopsy reports, Witness statements, even Weather reports. You'll find all the details about the Police Investigation, police views and the Ripper letters too. These are the facts. Now the second part of the book shares the many theories, suspects and even other potential victims related to the case. What's great about this part is that the Editors don't try to shove a theory down our throat and they don't say if a theory is credible or not. They let us, the readers, decide which ones are credible and which ones are ridiculous. Basically it's up to us to decide who is the most likely suspect and it's up to us to try to find more details about each theory, and I really like this. I hate when an author try to shove a theory down the reader's throat and I hate when an author claim he or she has solved a legendary case when it's not true at all. This collection of 17 different theories is a great read, I've discovered a lot of different suspects and, to me, most of them are very credible and possible. Which one is, in my view, the most credible ?? Well I don't know, I need to read more about each possibilities, just to be sure. And finally you'll find a filmography and complete bibliography, every books written about the case from 1888 to 2008 are listed at the end of this volume. You have an interest for the legendary case of Jack The Ripper ? Then you don't want to miss this book, you need to add this book to your library. All the facts, all the theories, all the suspects, all the possibilities....in one book: THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF JACK THE RIPPER. Now if you'll excuse me I have to order other books about this fascinating case. :)
